North Island in New Zealand was hit by an earthquake that caused tremors as far away as the capital Wellington and Auckland, the largest city in the country.

The earthquake, which struck the central part of the island near Mount Ruapehu at 4:47 pm local time, struck a depth of 35.8 km.

Although the official earthquake classification was initially awarded in the 4 Magnitude or Low Magnitude 5 range, the US Geological Service says the official classification for the earthquake was 4.7 Magnitude.

Although the earthquake wasn’t strong enough to cause any major damage or cause a tsunami, it was still shallow enough for the shaking to feel relatively far away. In New Plymouth, on the West Coast, an eight-story office building was seen shaking for 45 seconds.

Small landslides have been reported on some roads, albeit not enough to close them, and a brief evacuation has been reported at a palace near Mount Ruapehu.
