Ian Rush leaves Liverpool for Everton, Roman Abramovich becomes Chelsea manager and other great April Fool jokes in football

It’s April, so talkSPORT.com looks the best in football – and there were classics.

1. Roman Abramovich has named himself Chelsea’s new manager

We start with our own gags Day Fool’s Day’s Fool’s Day. On April 1, 2013, with Rafael Benitez proving the very unpopular interim manager at Stamford Bridge – and the ninth boss in less than a decade owned by Roman Abramovich – our fearless reporter ‘Paolo Fril’ informed the world that the Russian was planning to name himself next Chelsea manager. We even got former Blues boss Gianluc Vialli to confirm that Abramovich was contacted for advice on how he was the boss, and the Italian informed us that he wanted to buy his coaching badges!

2. Grandstand fight

When Des Lynam introduced viewers to Beeb’s flagship Saturday sports show on April 1, 1989, two men in the studio behind began a feud. One day we hope to see something similar on Sky Soccer Saturday, except the real one. We actually just want the show, along with GameDay Live, to return to the airwaves.

3. Craven cottage sinks

BBC Teletext – Remember That? – claimed on 1 April 2000 that Fulham’s river soil, Craven Cottage, had gradually sunk into the Thames River. He was an April fool, but this season, Fulham seems to be sinking really fast.

4. Ian Rush signs for Everton

In the 1980s Merseyside rivals Liverpool they were undoubtedly the two best teams in England, if not in Europe, and one man who seemed to give the Merseyside red half was Ian Rush. Anfield’s muse-marker has made a habit of shooting against the Blues, especially in the cup final. So when Shoot magazine shown to Rushie on the cover in an Everton T-shirt on April 1, 1989, the Kopites couldn’t believe their eyes, and the Evertonians jumped for joy … until they moved to page 7, where a cruel scam was revealed under the headline, ‘Rush For Everton Neverton ‘.

5. The Madonna of Maradona

The year 1989 really was the vintage for the festive soccer footprints in April. An Italian TV channel claimed that Diego Maradona performed similarly to pop star Madonna. The only difficulty is that Maradona was married and did not take too kindly suggestions to cheat on his omission. Maradona was worshiped as a god in Naples and, reportedly under pressure from the local mob, the TV station subsequently issued a deep apology.

6. The new manager of Man United

In April 2016, with Louis van Gaal on his way out – he is still angry about it – Ferdinand tweeted his picture standing on the Old Trafford drive line, saying: “A new chapter. A contract has been signed. We look forward to moving to management in June. We have a great summer ahead!”

Of course, Rio was not set up for excavation at Old Trafford, and Jose Mourinho arrived instead. It turns out he “thanked” everyone. For those unfamiliar with the term, it was used when he cheated on his teammates Rio World Cup cheers, including Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville and David Beckham.

7. Southampton’s New Look

Saints can also be a lot of fun in 2016, they argued, after meeting with focus groups, to discover “a more modernized ridge that still symbolizes the city and surrounding areas, while recognizing more modern trends.”

Reef football was supposed to replace Saint emoji. “The thinking is that the club has become much more than a football club in recent years, through its work in the community and its approach to thinking,” the statement read.
