The coastal Oregon community steps in with help from forest fire cleanup

The town of Otis in Lincoln County was one of several Oregon cities to be destroyed in the bushfires in September.

Otis, Ur. – A fire devastated Mount Eko across the Bonnie Pass in the coastal town of Otis in early September.

“The fire was very hot, the aluminum melted. The temperature is around 1,300 degrees, so it was very steep,” said Corey Rivera, who lost his home in the fire.

The father of eight had to take his family out in the middle of the night. But while the fire destroyed his belongings, it did not destroy his faith.

Rivera said, “We trust God in everything that will happen and want to be a part of it.”

He was able to borrow equipment to clean his plot and post information about helping a few others to Facebook.

“Six weeks later, we have a list of nearly 160 volunteers, centers, groups, people, equipment from three different states, plus money and donations,” Rivera said.

He turned his home into a command center where dozens of volunteers showed up on Saturday to clean up property for 26 homeowners. From chopping down trees to removing metals, neighbors and strangers step in to help each other, putting their losses aside.

Don Stewart is known in the Otis neighborhood for his adorable Christmas decorations.

“It looks like a Disneyland on Christmas,” said Stewart. “Last year, they lit 100,000 lights and made the counter turn.”

There was only a hint of what could have been this year’s adornment.

“We never expected the fire to take us out of the fire. Tsunami, earthquake yes. Fire, no.” He also lost everything. His flag flutters in the half of the stick and his faith keeps it going. “Next year will be different and I will come back bigger and better.”

It is a community woven together with faith and support for each other.

Volunteers will be at Pony Trail Lane for the next eight days to clean the pieces. They hope their efforts will inspire others to do the same in their neighborhoods.
