Cats of a woman who died in the Izmir earthquake adopted by new families

The cats of a woman who died in the 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the Turkish Aegean coast on October 30 have been adopted after undergoing treatment.

Suhaila Erdunms was killed in the rubble of Reza Bay’s eight-storey apartment in Berkeley, which collapsed to the ground due to poor infrastructure after the earthquake that killed 116 people and injured 1,034.

Search and rescue teams rescued about 12 cats and were treated in a veterinary clinic.

Erdöns’ body was recovered, along with 33 others who died in the rubble of the collapsed building.

The cat treats Amara Patti, the vet, said he knew Erdöns personally and that he treated all of her cats.

“The cats were brought to my clinic and I was deeply distressed to see that they were the cats that Erdönmez was taking care of. I took care of them as if they were my cats,” indicating that Erdönmez was the first person he thought of when he learned of the collapse of Reza Bey’s apartment.

The vet said Erdöns, who was also an animal rights advocate, took care of nearly 50 stray cats, some of the cats were living in the house with them and some were in the empty store in the basement of the apartment.

“After the accident, her husband came to my clinic. He took back two cats and told me to put the others up for adoption. He mentioned that he would build a cat shelter on his wife’s behalf,” adding that many animal lovers contacted him to adopt the cats after the earthquake.

“I’ve given nine kittens to good families. I have one cat left from Mrs. Erdönms and have completed his treatment as well. And Patti noted that there are animal lovers who would like to adopt this adorable cat.”

Meanwhile, academic studies are still underway to investigate the tsunami that occurred in Sygacik after the earthquake.
