(Reuters) – Kilauea volcano on Big Island of Hawaii erupted on Sunday evening, according to a report by the United States Geological Survey, followed by an earthquake that struck the southern flank of the volcano.

Residents were urged to stay indoors as steam fell over the sky and ash fell.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded an earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located under the south flank of Colauea Volcano, at 10:36 PM local time, according to the consultancy https://on.doi.gov/2LXAPQr.

It was the largest activity seen at the volcano since 2018, when a series of earthquakes and explosive eruptions at the summit over a period of several months forced the evacuations. Hundreds of homes were destroyed in the pyroclastic flows.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency reported on Twitter https://bit.ly/3awLH1G early Monday, an eruption was reported Sunday at the Halemaumau Crater at Kilauea volcano. The agency urged residents to stay home.

The US Geological Survey said the eruption began with the opening of multiple cracks on the walls of Halema`uma`u Crater.
