Earthquakes, Chris Wondolowski clinched a one-year deal

This is how the San Jose Earthquakes announced the return of Chris Wondolovsky, the top scorer in the MLS.

Earthquakes fans received an early gift on Christmas morning as the team announced that Wondolovsky, 37, had signed a one-year contract to stay with San Jose for the 2021 season.

“I was totally committed to making 2020 the last year of my career, but I looked back and couldn’t wait to join my team-mates again as we look forward to bringing the League Cup back to San Jose,” Wondolowski said in a match. A statement issued by the team. “Fans have consistently supported me during the ups and downs and I’ve always been sorry I didn’t properly say goodbye.”

Wendolovsky hinted for the first time that 2020 might not be his last season in the NFL in November, saying, “I still want to play for another year,” before indicating that the decision wasn’t the only one being made. At the time, Wondolowski said one of the catalysts in his potential comeback was the opportunity to end his career in front of fans who had supported him.

Wondolowski scored 166 goals in his career over his 15-year career in MLS, the most of any player, beating Landon Donovan, who scored 145 goals during a 15-year period in the league from 2001-2016. Wondolovsky scored 162 goals for San Jose, all since 2009 when the team returned to the area after moving to Houston from 2006-2009.

The Danville, California native was originally selected by his home club in the fourth round of the 2005 MLS Draft and was named Earthquakes Player of the Year or Player of the Year in seven of 11 seasons with San Jose.

“He gave everything he had to San Jose Earthquakes and there was no doubt that he deserved a better bid farewell than he would have allowed in 2020,” said Earthquakes General Manager Jesse Fioranelli in a statement. “We are excited to have Wondo fighting alongside us in 2021 and for our fans to be the biggest goalscorer in the league for another season.”

Wondolowski was Earthquakes’ leading scorer during the 2020 season, finishing seven goals, plus one in the “MLS is Back Tournament” round match against Real Salt Lake and another during the team’s elimination match against Sporting Kansas City.
