ShakeAlert’s earthquake early warning system went into operation in Oregon on Thursday

No registration needed, just turn on emergency alerts on mobile

Salem, Oregon (KTVZ) – The ShakeAlert® Earthquake Early Warning System, an earthquake detection tool operated by the United States Geological Survey, is launched in Oregon on Thursday.

No subscription is required to receive ShakeAlert notifications, and the only action required is to enable emergency alerts through cell phone settings. For instructions on where to find these settings, visit ORShakeAlert.us.

ShakeAlert uses science and technology to quickly detect large earthquakes and sends a real-time alert to people via their cell phones before the shaking reaches their location.

These important alerts come automatically on most cell phones, beep and display a text message that says, “An earthquake has been detected! Drop, cover, hold. Protect yourself.” This message is also available in Spanish for phones set to receive alerts in that language.

“The recent disasters that have affected our state have taught us the importance of being prepared,” said Andrew Phelps, director of the Oregon Bureau of Emergency Management. “ShakeAlert notifications can provide important seconds of warning before we feel the effects of an earthquake, giving people an opportunity to take action to protect themselves.”

ShakeAlert does not anticipate when or where the earthquake will occur or how long it will last. It detects earthquakes that have already started, and provides seconds of advance warning that allows people and systems to take action to protect life and property from damaging vibrations.

The system can also be used to trigger automatic actions such as shutting off a gas valve or slowing down a train, measures that can prevent infrastructure failures in the aftermath of an earthquake.
