50 students injured in a stampede after the earthquake

More than 50 students were injured in a school stampede after an earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook parts of Tanzania and western Kenya Thursday morning.

According to the earthquake website, the quake occurred at around 4:47 am local time (0147 GMT).

An official from Ram Hospital in southwestern Kenya told the local news site Kenyans.co.ke that 50 girls from the Keriri Girls’ School have been taken to the hospital for treatment after the stampede.

“We received a distress call saying that some girls had been injured in the earthquake.” “So we were on alert,” said Enok Abobo, director of Ram Hospital.

He added that most of the students had been discharged from the hospital, but nine girls were still under observation.

Six students from Ryabye Mixed High School in Kiruka town, Nyamira Province (southwestern Kenya) were hospitalized after they sustained stampede wounds after the earthquake struck parts of Nyamira in the early hours of Thursday.

Amos Mariba, Nyamira County Commissioner, confirmed the injuries, saying a 17-year-old student from the school had broken his leg.
