April is California’s earthquake preparedness month, and the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) are reminding residents to “do not panic” and have a plan for how to protect themselves in the event of an earthquake.

San Diego County is home to three major active faults: the Rose Canyon Fault (which runs along the coast, through Downtown, Old Town, and La Jolla), and the San Jacinto and Elsinore Faults, which run through the northern and eastern regions of the county. Earthquakes along these faults can lead to devastating earthquakes that may disrupt roads, transportation, and services such as water, gas and telephone connections for weeks or months. Coastal areas are also at risk from a tsunami.

As part of the state’s 2021 campaign “Don’t get caught up in the watch,” OES and Cal OES officials are encouraging residents to spend time knowing their risks, updating their emergency plan, registering for local emergency alerts, and downloading earthquake early warning application.

District Emergency Services Bureau will launch earthquake early warning technology, ShakeReadySD, backed by ShakeAlert®, in the SD Emergency app in July. When enabled, ShakeReadySD is designed to alert iPhone and Android users seconds in advance of an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or higher with moderate to strong vibration expected in your area so you can quickly take the right actions to protect yourself.

Meanwhile, California residents can download the free state app MyShake on iPhones and Android devices. The MyShake app, managed by Cal OES, is part of the Earthquake Warning California system that likewise uses a network of ground motion sensors located across the state to alert users through the app, Android alerts, and a wireless emergency alert system to “Drop, Cover, Cover and wait” seconds before The arrival of a major earthquake by the above criteria.
