Leeds Blast: A massive “earthquake” blast shakes homes

An explosion in Leeds stunned dozens of residents, as some originally believed that an earthquake struck the city.

A loud explosion was heard at approximately 2.15 pm today and the firefighting crew at the site.

“Everyone just got out of their homes in a state of panic. The whole street came out,” said Laura Bailey Leedslife.

“101 rang and they tell me there was a gas explosion at the top of the road.

“All the buildings shook. I thought the earthquake was a bit. The heart was stopping.

“I watched the windows literally move and vibrate. I’ve never heard anything like it in my life.”

The explosion was reportedly heard in the vicinity of Seacroft and Winmore.

Shania Leach said: “It looked a lot closer than it was, I thought he was someone on the street, but then my little sister shouted from the top floor so she could see smoke from the store.

“When I stood to go and see what’s going on outside it was just a big jolt, I just threw me and the windows were only shaking, I thought the windows would pass.”

A statement issued by West Yorkshire Police said: “At 2.20 pm, firefighters called the police today to report an explosion around the Lundes shop, on Weatherby Road, Wellington Hill, Leeds.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene.
