Coronary Virus Effect: Research shows significant changes in spending habits in the Gulf region during COVID-19 shelter are in place

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – Coronary protection requests in place have had a major impact on consumer spending as shoppers change their buying habits.

These trends are analyzed to help determine whether demobilized retail workers will be reinstated when stores reopen.

The moment we learned that shelter requests were coming, our shopping habits changed dramatically. We saw grocery stores stripped naked that aren’t even part of earthquake preparedness kits.

“I don’t think we realize that people will buy all the flour, pasta and all the toilet paper,” said Rachel Masarro of the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies. “These are things we didn’t think of putting them in our earthquake supplies.”

In our region, grocery spending increased by 81% in mid-March compared to the previous year. Retail sales briefly increased by 33%. Sales of hobbies and games increased 29%. Purchases of specialty foods and drinks increased by 63%.

As lines become unbearable to reach stores, spending has shifted to online shopping.

Amazon Fresh saw a 400% surge. Food was clearly a priority. Traditional retailers and restaurants that are left with orders for external orders only fell victim to it. Over the first four weeks of shelters, their sales decreased by about 32%. With the unemployment rate soaring, clothing store sales fell nearly 50%.

“We were already spending more than half of our money on online purchases, and for this reason, we tend to make this shift away from brick and mortar stores,” said Ms. Massaro.

A Costco executive says sales of outdoor furniture are on the rise with warm weather and as families collaborate in search of fresh air and sunlight. Discount pricing may be partially responsible.

The shift in spending to the internet and how shelter orders have affected what we have stored are now feed for business owners to digest as they look to the future. Difficult decisions will need to be made about reopening stores and how many unknown employees are to return them.
