The Vacaville Opera House is the perfect venue for weddings

VACAVILLE – The Vacavill Opera House is an elegant place that will make any bride happy with its relaxed and antique atmosphere.

The Opera House has hosted live opera performances in Vacaville in the last century. The building was constructed in 1897 and was able to survive the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 thanks to some innovative building work, according to owner Sandra Over.

“The brick pattern is what saved the building during the earthquake,” she said. “It’s really different. Some go horizontal and some flip, go vertical”

The Vacaville Opera House was originally built by Sidney Clay Walker, who was one of the original organizers of Vacaville Water and Light Company. The opera house originally featured a 600-seat theater for operas and performances. Since Walker’s death in 1908, the Opera House has been home to a movie theater and Masonic Lodge Hall. According to the venue’s website, the Golden West Market occupied the first floor for some time.

The Over family has rented the building from Merchant and Main for several years, using the second floor for weddings, business meetings, or anything else someone needs plenty of space for group get-togethers.

“My family took over the banquet area and renovated it,” Over said.

Merchant and Main eventually moved to another building down the street.

A previous renovation was carried out in the early 1980s.

“We were hoping it would make the renovation look like it used to be,” Over said.

It is interesting to note that the attic space has graffiti from performers of the last century – some of which are in Chinese.

Last year for the opera house was crazy.

“We had to shut our doors completely,” Over said. “I decided that since no one was present, we could do some renovations.”

I realized after a few months that they need to stop renewing until more money arrives. Vacaville Opera House just got a new website as part of the updates.

The building hosted two wedding parties in October and November. Over said she was relieved but also a little nervous.

“It’s a whole new handbook of changes,” she said.

The weddings were very small, and everyone was asked to wear a mask and stay away from each other.

“The people themselves wanted to reduce attendance,” Offer said. “We don’t have the capacity to accommodate 300 people, so that wasn’t a problem.”

Things go way back in time with the biggest events booked until 2022.

The venue has hosted a wedding fair with vendors for the past few years, but Offer said she’s not sure how to do so this year. Plans are made to host an open house on Friday and the pianist will come and play at the evening events.

“I’m planning a New Years Eve party, too,” Offer said.
