Coronavirus: Japan has opened a state of emergency – BBC News

Japan has extended the state of emergency until the end of May after a late government meeting on Monday.

The country has so far prevented an outbreak of the virus, but it still has about 15,000 cases and about 500 deaths associated with Covid-19. Observers have warned that there is insufficient analysis and that hospitals are already limited.

The state of emergency was supposed to expire on Wednesday, but will remain in effect until May 31. It empowers governors to ask residents to close their homes and businesses. There are no penalties for non-compliance, however.
