Guyana's chief justice to rule on electoral injunction tomorrow

Chief Justice (CJ) Roxanne George-Wiltshire will make a decision tomorrow on whether the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) can declare the results of the regional and general elections on March 2.

The case was brought up last Thursday by private citizen Reeaz Hollander who claimed that GECOM had not complied with section 84.01 of the Representation of the People Act, Chapter 1: 03 to check the results for region four.

Keith Lowenfield, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), and Clairmont Mingo, Area Four returning agent (RO), Clairmont Mingo were also respondents.

During the election, there were 897 polling stations in region four, but the RO only followed the verification process for 421 ballots.

Mingo then made a controversial final statement showing that the Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (UNPA + AFC) won the district with 136,335 votes while the Progressive / Civic Opposition Party (PPP / C) obtained 77,258 votes.

George-Wiltshire heard hours of argument today from Hollanders (SC) lead counsel Douglas Mendes and GECOM attorney Neil Boston, SC.

Boston argues that Mingo has largely complied with the law and that the DS can adopt the methodology he wants when he arrives with the final results.

Boston also said there was no evidence to prove that it was the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Roxanne Meyers, who counted the ballots that led to Mingos' statement .
