Philippines detects avian flu outbreak in quail farm
MANILA (Reuters) – The Philippines has detected an outbreak of bird flu in a northern province after tests showed the highly infectious influenza A virus subtype H5N6 on a quail farm, said Monday Minister of Farm of the country.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar said the bird flu virus, the same strain that hit some local poultry farms in 2017, was detected in the municipality of Jaen in the province of Nueva Ecija , where about 1,500 quails died on a single farm.
A total of 12,000 quails were destroyed and buried to prevent new infections, said Dar, citing reports from the field.
"We are on top of the situation," he said. "Surveillance around the 1 km and 7 km radius will be carried out immediately to ensure that the disease has not progressed around the said perimeter."
Animal quarantine checkpoints have also been set up to restrict the movement of all live domestic birds to and from the quarantine area, he said.
"We want to emphasize that this is a unique case affecting a single quail farm," said Dar.
Dr. Arlene Vytiaco, technical spokesperson for avian influenza in the Department of Agriculture, said that although there is a possibility of transmission to humans by excretion and secretion, "the chances are very thin. "
"The death rate is also zero," she said.
Dar said his department and the local government are jointly investigating and tracing contacts to determine the source of the infection.
To ensure a regular domestic supply of poultry, he said that the transport of day-old chicks, hatching eggs and chicken meat will be allowed provided the farms of origin have tested negative for bird flu.
