Ukrainian parliament to accept Prime Minister's resignation
KYIV The Ukrainian parliament is expected to accept the resignation of the country's prime minister on Wednesday and reshuffle the cabinet after six months of work.
Members of the People’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy party, which dominates Parliament, said the party had decided to accept Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk and replace him with Denys Shmygal.
Shmygal, who was appointed deputy prime minister last month, had previously been head of regional administration in the western Ivano-Frankivsk region.
Legislators have said that several other key cabinet members could lose their jobs in the reshuffle.
Honcharuk, 35, first resigned in January after being filmed saying that Zelenskiy, a former sitcom star with no previous political experience, knew nothing about the economy. Zelenskiy then described the situation as unpleasant, but asked Honcharuk to keep his job.
It was not immediately known what prompted Honcharuk to withdraw now.
The cabinet reshuffle comes as Zelenskiy's approval rates have dropped considerably since his overwhelming victory in the April presidential election. Zelenskiy, 42, campaigned on promises to end the war with Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine and fight endemic corruption in the country.
Zelenskiy has launched a new round of talks to settle the conflict and a POW exchange, but clashes in the east have continued.
In recent months, Zelenskiy has also found himself in the midst of the impeachment process against President Donald Trump, accused of withholding approximately $ 400 million in military aid from him.
