Calgary Transit Accelerates Cleanup As City Responds To COVID-19 Risk

The Calgary Emergency Management Agency says the city is ready to deal with the first suspected case of the new coronavirus in Calgary.

Alberta health officials announced on Thursday that a woman in Calgary had contracted COVID-19 on a cruise ship, and on Friday, an Edmonton-area man was confirmed as the second suspected Alberta case.

Coby Duerr, deputy head of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), said news of a likely COVID-19 case in Calgary was a "trigger" for another step in the infectious disease management plan of the city.

"We opened this plan several weeks ago," he said. "We have been working on a proactive preparation for this for some time."

Albertans are at low risk of getting COVID-19, according to AHS, but health officials predict that the risk "may increase in the coming weeks."

Duerr said Calgary Transit has already stepped up efforts to clean their vehicles and disinfect the premises in the transit system that a lot of people touch, like the bus posts or the button to open the CTrain doors. They're also looking for more potential cleaning options, like antimicrobial coatings.

Earlier this week, the Toronto public health authority said that a man diagnosed with COVID-19 had taken public transportation in this city for several days before being tested for the virus.

The virus is spread from person to person by droplets from a cough or sneeze, or by touching contaminated surfaces. Alberta Health says there is no evidence that it is airborne over long distances or over long periods of time.

Duerr said that at the end of the day, public transit users can do more to help stop the spread of the flu or COVID-19 viruses – and protect themselves – by washing their hands before and after taking the bus or the LRT.

"It is a shared responsibility," he said. “In reality, you can integrate a whole new bus into the system, but as soon as three or four people get on that bus, people touch it. We need to make sure that we understand that you can only clean one bus that much. "

The city is also expanding the possibilities for its employees to work from home if possible.

Hand sanitizers and wipes will be available in "high traffic areas" for city workers.

There are specific guidelines on what to do if a city employee contracts COVID-19, said Duerr.

To allow Calgary to continue providing essential public services, the city will take additional steps if the situation worsens in any way, he added.

"Things like having fresh, clean drinking water, making sure we have a fire response and police response – these are the essential services that we have plans to make sure that we we can maintain these services through an event like this. ”

He stressed that the "best defense" for Calgarians is to have "good hand hygiene" – by making sure people wash their hands before and after being in public spaces, and by covering any cough or sneeze.
