Mandatory mink vaccination against COVID for ranchers in Oregon

Salem, Oregon-The Oregon Department of Agriculture has submitted a temporary emergency rule requiring all mink ranchers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to Oregon’s public broadcaster, state veterinarian Dr. Ryan Schortz said authorities are trying to prevent the virus from mutating in mink and returning to humans.
“ODA is taking the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of transmission in captive mink and reduce the potential for viral mutations and transmission to humans,” Schortz said in a statement. Stated.
The state is vaccinated mainly by ranchers until the end of August.
A 2020 report by the US Far Commission counts 11 mink farms licensed in Oregon, with an estimated 438,327 animals. As a result, Oregon is the fourth largest fur producer after Wisconsin, Utah, and Idaho. Eight of Oregon’s mink farms are in Marion County, two in Clatsop County, and one in Lin County.
