Skunks recently tested positive for rabies in El Paso County.
El Paso County health officials recently confirmed rabies in Skunk. This is the third positive test in the county this year.
Animals with rabies are common in the summer, according to a news release, and health officials are alerting the public to pets to keep their vaccines up to date. Do not touch or feed wild or stray animals.
The virus rabies is also found in bats, raccoons, and foxes. Releases said squirrels and rabbits are not considered a risk of rabies.
Rabies is transmitted to people by being bitten by rabies animals. Saliva from infected animals can enter open wounds or cuts in humans, or through the membranes of the eyes, nose, or mouth.

Last year, 16 animals (5 bats, 9 skunks, 1 fox, 1 dog) were rabies positive in El Paso County. In 2018, 67 were positive, including 60 skunks. In 2017, 28 were found to be positive, including 21 skunks.
