Centralized blood pressure management reduces A-Fib risk: a study

They analyzed data from more than 8,000 hypertensive patients at high risk of heart disease who enrolled in the US National Institutes of Health trial known as SPRINT.
Participants were on an intensive blood pressure management regimen (target <120 mm Hg) or standard treatment (target <140 mm Hg).
Over the five-year period, the standard control group had 118 atrial fibrillation and the intensive control group had 88.

The effects of intensive hypotension on a-fib risk were similar in all groups, regardless of gender, race, or blood pressure level.
“Hypertension is the most common modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation,” said lead author Dr Elsayed Soliman, professor of epidemiology and prevention at Wake Forest, Winston Salem, NC.
The main results of the SPRINT study were published in 2015. A previous SPRINT study by Wake Forest researchers found that lowering blood pressure could reduce the risk of mental disorders and delay age-related brain damage.
