After the death brush, Spanish virus survivors learn to live again
Madrid (AFP) – After fighting the virus that almost killed her in a hospital in Madrid for several months, Rosa Maria Fernandez now learns the basics again: walking, speaking, using a knife.
At the age of 71, progress is measured in stages, and even a seemingly small victory can be a reason for celebration.
“I could barely speak a week ago, but now I can,” says Fernandez, who rushed to the hospital on March 6 to breathe and was later diagnosed with the virus.
“I’m surprised that I can speak and you understand me,” she sat in a wheelchair near the bed and heard her new voice fluttering weakly behind a blue-faced mask. I am proud
Behind her, on-screen numbers carefully monitor oxygen levels, and a nearby hovering doctor confirms she’s less eager to speak.
She is one of the 235,000 confirmed coronaviruses in Spain, one of the most devastating countries in the world.
After fighting off the illness for weeks, she thinks she’s lucky to have escaped death in a country where over 28,000 died of the illness.
“I thought I was dying. There was a moment when I couldn’t communicate because I was suffocating,” her voice began to faint.
“It was absolutely terrible. She says of the months spent in intensive care as doctors at the Gregorian Maranon Hospital fought to keep her alive.
“An angel of death has passed me.”
I’m still sick, but it’s been a long time since I checked in at the hospital.
Like many COVID-19 patients, she was very sedated, intubated, fitted with a ventilator, and discharged when she was able to breathe on her own.
However, quitting intensive care was just the beginning of a long road to recovery, including large-scale rehabilitation that was not yet over.
Recently she has made a lot of progress. After more than eight weeks in the hospital, she finally got up and started eating herself.
Survive but at a price
But survival comes at a price.
Prolonged stints in intensive care may cause patients to affect quality of life, including language impairment, memory loss, and anxiety, among others, due to severe muscle wasting, poor breathing, and cognitive problems. There remains one problem.
In such cases, rehabilitation is very important, says Ruben Juarez Fernandez, a 39-year-old rehabilitation specialist.
“It’s all about minimizing their disability in the future and minimizing aftereffects when they return to normal life.”
Physiotherapist Laura Garcia Montes, 30, is helping Fernandez regain limb movements, improving respiratory function and improving lung function.
She can’t walk yet, but she said that learning to sit made a big difference.
“Rosa has lived here for a long time. It’s been over two months. Now she is able to do things, more cooperation and she is happier and more active Will be faster. “
Coordination with survivors of COVID-19 requires special attention as it often causes nausea and dyspnea when changing position.
“It takes a bit of work, but I want to recover, so I can sit without feeling nausea or falling.”
“I want a normal life”
39-year-old occupational therapist Marta García de Francisco says Rosa is not only getting up on her own, she is also recovering her hands and learning to use cutlery recently.
“There are many patients who can’t use their hands, dress themselves, or lift a spoon to their mouths as they used to,” she said.
“It may be due to neurological problems they are observing in COVID-19 patients who have not moved on intensive care which causes muscle weakness.”
They are also working on her primary stability so she can finally get up and dress herself.
It is not clear how long she has to be hospitalized.
“We take it weekly. Now I see her sitting. Next, see if she can get up (on her own) and go to the bathroom, change clothes, eat. I’ll see how I work on things and things, “says Fernandez.
“Every time we make her more independent. That’s why rehab services are here.”
Rosa says she only wants to “live a normal life” after rushing to death.
“I feel better when I see improvements every day,” she said.
“I still have a way to go, but I’m overcoming it.”
