Utah Doctor Prepares New Omicron COVID-19 Strain
Salt Lake City — Monday, President Joe Biden The new COVID-19 variant is a source of concern, but said it wasn’t a panic.. Omicron variants have not yet been detected in the United States, but there are 10 important mutations. By comparison, there are two delta variants.
Dr. Cameron Webb, Equity Senior Advisor at the White House’s COVID Task Force, said:

“We certainly don’t have to panic, but in the last 20 months we’ve learned enough from this pandemic not to downplay anything,” Webb told FOX13.

Cases containing variants have been found in more than 12 countries, including Canada.
Dr. Sankar Swaminathan, Principal Doctor of Infectious Diseases, University of Utah, said:
What is so worried about Omicron variants? A large number of mutations involving peaplomers. That particular protein allows the virus to infect cells.
Mutations can mean that Omicron is more contagious and can even bypass the antibodies produced by the COVID-19 vaccine.
“That’s the protein that’s the target of the vaccine. Changes can reduce the effectiveness of the vaccine,” said Dr. Swaminasan.
Currently, the Utah Department of Health sequences 10% of positive tests, almost all of which are delta variants.
Omicron’s potential in Utah could put additional strain on hospitals.
Dr. Reisha Noren, a state epidemiologist at the Utah Department of Health, said:
