RI has the first human case of Jamestown Canyon virus since 2013
Providence, RI (AP) —Rhode Island’s public health authorities have identified the first human case of the Jamestown Canyon virus in the state since 2013.
The State Department said in a statement Monday that those who tested positive for mosquito-borne viruses were residents of Kent County in their 50s.
The person has been discharged and is recovering.
“Although it’s no longer a mosquito season on Rhode Island, recently identified cases of JCV and WNV have some simple precautions for health and safety when spending a good time outdoors with family and friends. It reminds me that it helps to maintain, “said RI Secretary of Health Nicole Alexander Scott.
“After the first frost, mosquitoes may no longer bite, but Rhode Islanders are ticks that can continue to spread and bite diseases like Lyme disease even in winter,” outside the forest. “Reminds me that I’m not there,” she continued.
The virus causes fever, muscle aches, headaches, malaise and can progress to meningitis and encephalitis.
