February 15 (Reuters)-Vaccination of pregnant women against coronavirus may help prevent COVID-19 infection in babies, especially if pregnant mothers fire late in pregnancy. Researchers reported on Tuesday.
The findings show whether the benefits of vaccination during pregnancy extend to infants who are too young to be vaccinated.
Researchers at several children’s hospitals and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) examined children under 6 months of age from July 2021 to January 2022.

This study analyzed data from 379 inpatient infants (176 and 203 with COVID-19) who were hospitalized for other problems. The COVID-19 vaccine was found to be 61% effective overall in preventing the hospitalization of children vaccinated by mothers during pregnancy.
When the mother was vaccinated 21 weeks to 14 days before delivery, her protection increased to 80%. Vaccination benefits for infants vaccinated to mothers early in pregnancy were reduced to 32%.
The authors of the study warned that estimates of efficacy in early pregnancy should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size.
