Canon City, Colorado (KKTV)-The Land Management Department generally provides up-to-date information after the deaths of nearly 100 horses at Canon City’s facilities.
Authorities believe that the equine influenza virus is the “probable” cause of outbreaks that have killed at least 95 animals in wild horse and donkey facilities since April 23.
According to BLM, the more typical mild clinical manifestations of influenza have also been observed in about 10 to 20 percent of the other 2,184 horses in facilities other than West Douglas. No deaths have occurred in larger groups of horses. West Douglas horses were collected by emergency surgery in 2021 after a wildfire that affected their habitat.
