New interim data released by the federal government estimate that between January and December 2021, approximately 108,000 people died from drug overdose.

“This is an increase of about 15% from the number of deaths in 2020,” said Farida Ahmad, a research scientist at the National Center for Health Statistics of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 94,000 people died in 2020.
