According to the report, the overall vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 infection was almost 70% of the general population who received at least two vaccinations during the study period. By comparison, it was less than 66% in cancer patients.
After 3-6 months, efficacy decreased to approximately 61% in the control group and 47% in the cancer group.
Vaccine protection was higher for cancer group hospitalizations (about 83%) and deaths (about 93%) than infections, but diminished after a few months.
The type of cancer treatment was also important. Vaccines are less effective in cancer patients who have been treated with chemotherapy or radiation therapy in the last 12 months, 3-6 more than cancer patients who did not receive these treatments or were treated more than a year ago.
