Government taking a “focused” approach to monkeypox vaccination: Health authorities
Federal health officials are strategically deploying monkeypox vaccine doses nationwide in response to increasing cases, the Deputy Public Health Commissioner said Thursday.
Dr. Howard New said at a news conference that there are currently 26 cases of monkeypox confirmed in Canada. There are 25 cases in Quebec and 1 case in Ontario.
The virus can cause rashes, malaise, muscle aches, fever and headaches. It is often spread by close contact with the infected person, especially by exchanging fluids, but it can also spread in the air or on the surface.
Although the risk of infection to the general population is low, Njoo says health authorities are closely monitoring the virus and want to be able to deploy vaccines quickly in response to an outbreak.
“Following discussions among all Canada’s Chief Health Officers, we decided to take a targeted approach to vaccination and treatment,” Njoo said.
“We have made a rapid shift to pre-deploying a limited supply of vaccines and remedies from the National Emergency Strategic Stockpile (NESS) in our jurisdictions across the country.”
look | Government has no plans for monkeypox vaccine campaign
Dr. Howard New, Deputy Chief of Public Health, said at a news conference that Canada is not considering launching a vaccine campaign for monkeypox at this time.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has already sent 1,000 doses of IMVAMUNE vaccine to Quebec to supply the antiviral drug tecovirimat, also known as TPOXX.
Njoo does not say how many times the vaccine was sent to other states. He said PHAC is working with states and territories to determine their needs.
“Based on high-risk cases and contacts, we need to ensure that vaccines arrive in a short period of time when needs or demands arise in a particular state or territory,” he said.
Njoo said the PHAC is currently unaware of the need for mass vaccination campaigns.
Dr. Luc Boarrow, director of public health in Quebec, said earlier Thursday that the state would begin providing vaccines to high-risk individuals.
Quebec confirmed 25 cases on ThursdayAll of them are tied to the larger Montreal region.
In the news release on ThursdayThe Quebec government said the state received doses on Tuesday.
“As defined by public health authorities, high-risk contacts in confirmed or possible cases of monkeypox may be vaccinated with a single dose of IMVAMUNE vaccine within 4 days of exposure. There is “, the release reads.
“The second dose can only be given if the risk of exposure is still present after 28 days. The dose provided will only be given as determined by the public health authorities.”
Monkeypox comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, which was eradicated in 1977.
Njoo acknowledged that the emergence of monkeypox in Canada could be alarming for some, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. He said that the virus that causes COVID-19 and monkeypox spreads differently.
“At this point, certainly based on what we have seen in epidemiology, [monkeypox] It seems to be limited to certain individuals who are clearly engaged in activities with close contact, “he said.
The virus is not the same, but can be prevented by many of the same methods used to control the COVID-19 pandemic, such as hand washing, physical distance, and wearing a mask, especially in public places.
Winnipeg’s National Institute of Microbiology has now completed sequencing of monkeypox samples to help understand how the virus is spreading, Njoo added.
