New Potential Diabetes Treatment Regenerates Insulin-Producing Cells
A new way to treat diabetes is to repair or replace cells in the body that naturally produce insulin. Swedish researchers have identified molecules that help stimulate the growth of new insulin-producing cells, reveal how they work, and open up new potential diabetes therapies.
Diabetes is characterized by the problem of insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and allows cells in the body to access insulin for energy. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreatic beta cells that normally produce insulin are often destroyed by the immune system and cannot make enough to meet the demand.

In a new study, researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden looked at small molecules that could help regenerate beta cells. The molecule known as CID661578 was identified in previous studies, but how accurately it worked and to what extent it remained unknown.
To investigate, the team investigated its molecular interaction in yeast cells and discovered that it binds to a protein called MNK2. Doing so allows the other two proteins to interact at higher levels, ultimately leading to the regeneration of larger beta cells.
The team tested the molecule in zebrafish and found that it lowered blood sugar levels compared to the control group. In laboratory-grown porcine pancreatic cells, the molecule was shown to induce the formation of new beta cells, but the molecular-fed human pancreatic organoids produced more insulin.
“Our findings show new potential targets for treating diabetes in that they show potential ways to stimulate the formation of new insulin-producing cells,” the final author of the study said. Says Dr. Olof Anderson. “We are now studying the effects of this molecule on human tissues and analyzing MNK2, the target protein of the molecule in tissues from healthy and diabetic donors.”
