COVID-19 cases surge in rural Texas counties
Some surrounding counties see a greater rate of increase than Dallas and Tarrant counties.
Cleburne, Texas—The number of cases of COVID-19 in Texas is skyrocketing, with rural counties not only lacking immunity, but some cities suffering even more damage than major cities.
Johnson County added an additional 182 cases over the past eight days, an increase of 72%, according to the State Department of Health.
“Just like in other regions, it’s rising rapidly,” said Jaime Moore, director of emergency management at Johnson County.
Moore said that small towns have few places to shop and eat, so they are concentrated and families are starting to reassemble.
“We’re seeing an increase because we have less social distance and fewer masks,” he said.
The county added a mask order to fight the spread on Friday.
Jumps have been seen in several counties in the last eight days. The number of cases increased over the period in Wise County by 68%, Kauffman County by 63%, Ellis County by 61% and Parker County by 131%, from 124 to 284.
The prospect is that the counties in Dallas and Tarrant have seen increases of 23% and 21% over the same time frame.
“Obviously, when you opened it, we knew the numbers would grow,” said Parker County Judge Pat Dean.
Deen allows the restaurant to continue operating at 75% capacity and does not require a mask. Masks are required for the July 4th fireworks display at Weatherford.
“I don’t think it’s the government’s role to go in and make these decisions,” Dean said.
He says the problem is that more than half of the residents may go east for work.
“You are spilling out and having that effect in its higher penetration, higher density areas,” he said. “We will have to reassess what our containment strategy was, and what it needs to be.”
More recently, a contractor, MTX Group, has taken over state contact tracking, while incidents have increased while smaller counties have less information. They now only look at the numbers, not the details about where the cases such as age, gender, etc. come from.
