Health officials warn poultry owners of deadly bird flu

COLDWATER — As fall migration begins, poultry owners are urged to protect their poultry from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

Found primarily in birds, the virus is highly contagious and can be fatal, especially in poultry. However, viruses have been found in other animals.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has reported an increase in HPAI cases in backyard poultry flocks, but none have been confirmed in Branch, St. Joseph, or Hillsdale counties.
