Long Beach expands eligibility for monkeypox vaccine again – Press Telegram
Long Beach has again expanded the pool of people eligible for the monkeypox vaccine. This includes people who are sexual partners of people in previously targeted groups, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday, Oct. 3.
With this move, the city will work with Los Angeles County.

According to a Ministry of Health press release, the expanded eligibility will also include sexual partners of the above groups, as well as those expected to belong to the above groups.
Long Beach’s Department of Health and Human Services also expanded eligibility to people whose jobs could expose them to the virus, including:
- Manipulate the orthopoxvirus in the laboratory.
- Perform a diagnostic test for orthopoxvirus in a clinical laboratory.
- A member of the designated public health response team.
- Administer the live vaccine used for smallpox.
- Designated health care workers who care for people with suspected or confirmed orthopoxvirus infection, including clinicians and environmental service personnel.
Health workers have a low risk of infection if they wear proper personal protective equipment, the health ministry said.
Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement that he was “committed to making a (monkeypox) vaccine available,” “especially to members of the community who are most at risk.”
The Department of Health announced Monday that there were 112 confirmed probable monkeypox cases in Long Beach, with at least three requiring hospitalization. All three are either in isolation at home or have already recovered.
Monkeypox is spread by prolonged skin-to-skin or face-to-face contact. This includes kissing, hugging, cuddling, and other intimate contact. Viruses can also be spread through infected objects such as cups, bedding, clothing, towels, and utensils.
Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and fatigue. Pimple-like and blistering rashes may appear on the face, mouth, and other parts of the body.
The Health Department will be distributing the monkeypox vaccine at Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. I host the site.

As of Monday, the health department had provided 7,700 doses of the vaccine.
