Study finds lack of honesty in following COVID-19 public health measures during pandemic
Many people wanted life to feel normal during the COVID-19 pandemic. But for this reason, among many other reasons, people are not adhering to public health measures in the United States.
A recent study found that nearly 50% of cohorts surveyed reported misrepresentation and/or non-compliance with public health measures during COVID-19 during the pandemic. Young participants and those who distrust science are more likely to misrepresent or fail to adhere to policy items, according to a study published in . JAMA network open.
Behavioral reasons for these actions include “wanting life to feel normal, wanting to exercise personal freedom, feeling that it’s not someone else’s business, not feeling very well.” included..
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, governments, businesses, and many other organizations have created measures to mitigate the spread of the disease. But public health measures can take a toll on psychological, social, economic, and physical health, and people may fail to comply with or misrepresent the policy. Examples of non-compliance include lying about COVID-19 test results or vaccination status.
Investigators have responded to the lack of research into why they ignore COVID-19 policies. They conducted this study to assess the frequency, reasons, and related factors of non-compliance and misrepresentation regarding COVID-19 public health measures.
After surveying 1733 participants, the researchers found that nearly half of the cohort were not adhering to public health measures for reasons such as personal autonomy, scientific denial, or reputational health information denial. I discovered that
The most common behaviors that participants engaged in with public health measures included exaggerating the COVID-19 precautions they were taking, breaking quarantine rules, and being potentially infected with COVID-19. Avoid getting tested when you think you are sick, don’t mention what you thought or knew.” He had COVID-19 when they were screened to enter the clinician’s office,” the study’s authors wrote.
The results also suggest that young participants are likely to be dishonest and ignore COVID-19 public health measures. They were also less likely to disclose true medical information and were generally more likely to comply with medical practices and follow COVID-19 precautions.
Those who don’t believe in science are also more likely to not adhere to COVID-19 public health measures. This population was less likely to wear masks, stay up to date on vaccines, and adhere to other public health behaviors.
“These findings suggest that misrepresentation and non-compliance with COVID-19 public health measures constitutes a serious public health challenge,” the study’s authors wrote.
Insights may be biased due to included study limitations starting with a sample that is not representative of the US population. Additionally, participants may have given dishonest answers that underestimated the survey results. This study cannot speak to the frequency of dishonest behavior, nor can they have the same rationale or reasoning today.
“Future work is needed to consider strategies for communicating the consequences of misrepresentation or non-compliance and to address the drivers,” the study’s authors wrote.
