Local child dies from flu as flu rages
A flu-positive child has died in eastern Ontario, health units in the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark districts confirmed Sunday.
“We are saddened by this tragic death,” Dr. Linna Lee, the unit’s acting health physician, said in an email. “Deaths from influenza infection are rare.”
The health department did not share details about the children who died, such as their ages or whether they had pre-existing medical conditions.
Estimates of annual flu deaths in Canada vary from hundreds to thousands, depending on the severity of the flu season.
This season is looking particularly tough. Influenza is now the leading respiratory virus circulating in the region, with more cases than usual at this time of year, Lee said.
Li said limited flu epidemics during the past two winters may mean people are more susceptible to infection than usual. Children, especially young children, are at increased risk of severe outcomes.
Flu vaccines are one of the most effective ways to reduce health risks, Li said, adding that he strongly recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older be vaccinated. .
