Wild bird dies in popular city lake after bird flu confirmed in Milton Keynes

A case of bird flu was confirmed in MK after a wild bird carcass was found in a popular lake.

Birds were present in Caldecott Lake, but the Parkes Trust has not confirmed their numbers or species.

A spokesperson said:

“The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirms that the risk of the virus spreading to humans is low.”

There are now confirmed cases in MK, and people are being asked not to feed wild waterfowl or touch feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings. You are encouraged to stick to the sidewalk and keep your dog on a leash.

Park users who have poultry or other birds at home should wash their hands and disinfect their footwear before caring for their own birds.

The UK is facing its biggest bird flu outbreak to date and strict measures have been put in place to keep it under control.

All poultry and captive birds must be kept indoors until further notice and strict special precautions must be taken by bird keepers.
