US tests sewage in more places for polio
December 1, 2022 — Communities in New York began testing sewage for signs of polio infection earlier this year after a man was diagnosed with paralytic polio in Rockland County, a suburb of New York City.
now, According to the CDC More locations will begin testing, including Philadelphia and Subway Detroit in Oakland County, Michigan.
Detecting the virus in sewage can help local governments target vaccination efforts.
The CDC is also discussing testing with other communities. Further efforts will focus on areas with low polio vaccination coverage where people have visited Rockdale County, New York. Associated Press report.
The CDC says the test will last four months.
“Wastewater testing can be an important tool in helping us understand whether poliovirus may be circulating in a community in certain circumstances,” said CDC’s National Immunization and Respiratory said José R. Romero, MD, director of the Center for Organ Diseases. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent a recurrence of paralytic polio and it is critical that people get vaccinated to protect themselves, their families and their communities from this devastating disease. ”
Scientists are already testing wastewater to track COVID-19. Authorities in Houston and Colorado will start testing sewage for antibiotic-resistant bacteria, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus and other diseases next year, according to the Associated Press.
