3 schools in Ann Arbor closed due to flu, COVID-19 and Rs.

A major health alert is now in effect across Michigan as flu cases surge.

For several weeks, Michigan appears to be lagging behind other states in case counts, but that could change once the CDC updates its latest flu map. It can happen today.

The flu is just one of many viruses the state is blaming. The number of COVID-19 cases is on the rise and RSV still poses a problem.

Disease is forcing more schools to close today. Ann Arbor Public Schools closed three buildings today due to overwhelming sickness.

Experts call this the winter virus surge. It’s basically the perfect storm that makes many children and adults sick in the middle of the holiday season.

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in at least 90% of the country, according to the federal government.

Dr. Matthew Simms of Corewell Health East, formerly known as Beaumont, explains what we’re starting to see across hospital systems.

“Respiratory syncytial virus is finally on the decline, but influenza is on the rise,” he said.

In the last week of November, the hospital system had 344 flu cases, but that number surged to over 750 in the second week of December. He said half of the cases were adults and the other half were children. 10% are hospitalized.

He said COVID-19 has stabilized at 200 to 300 cases a week.

“We are responding, but the emergency rooms are busy, and they tend to be at capacity most of the time,” he said.
