Highly prevalent young adults – CBS Denver

Denver (CBS4) — As the number of COVID-19 cases in Colorado increases, trends indicate higher rates of infection in teens and adolescents.

Data released by the state on Wednesday show that almost half of the new cases last week were people between the ages of 20 and 40. The data also showed that people over the age of 80 accounted for less than 7% of all Colorado cases.

Dr. Mark Moss, director of critical care at UC Health University Hospital at the University of Colorado, now says there is a slight increase in COVID-19 inpatients.

“I’m worried about that,” said Dr. Moss. “That little blip went from 20 to 27, back to 30, 40, and 160 at the hospital.”

So far, according to state data, people aged 20 to 29 make up the largest group of coronavirus cases.

“I think young people are immune to getting it, and that’s not the case,” Dr. Moss explained. “We have seen young people suffer serious illness in intensive care units using a similar support system. Young people not only get sick Sometimes.”

Dr. Elizabeth Carlton of the Colorado School of Public Health said that young adults usually have fewer symptoms and do not need to be hospitalized. But she sees a change in that trend.

“It’s more concerned that the rate of hospitalization for people under the age of 40 is positive,” said Dr. Carlton. “There are more and more young people, in either sense of those hospitalized with COVID.”

Health experts agree that COVID may not be so serious for young people, yet it can easily spread the virus unknowingly to vulnerable populations.

“If you’re 25, you get sick and have a cold for about a day, but you can go home and get infected with your parents and grandparents,” Dr. Moss explains. “Or your friends grandparents, and they will get sick.”
