Acadiana Experiencing Shortages in Pediatric Care
Acadiana pharmacies are running out of pediatric medicines used to combat flu and RSV symptoms, even though flu incidence has dropped to moderate levels.
Pharmacists say they don’t expect supply to meet demand any time soon.
Medicines such as Amoxil, Augmentin and Omnicef are all in short supply, says Ashley Berthelot, marketing director at Special Arts Pharmacy.
“Parents, not just in Acadiana but across the country, are struggling to find basic medicines for their children.From Tylenol to Motrin, many of those shelves are now empty. But even more alarming are the three most common antibiotics children need whenever they’re treated for bacterial infections like streptococcal pharyngitis and ear infections,” Berthelot said. says.
These drugs are usually useful for pain and flu-like symptoms in children.
Berthelot said doctors are now looking at alternative options for dealing with symptoms in children.
“If these drugs are not available, there are different protocols. Berthelot says.
Compounding pharmacists like Special Arts are helping distribute drugs around Acadiana, Berthelot said.
