“Rendescivir is the most promising treatment option to date for reducing the length of hospital stay in people suffering from severe coronavirus infections,” the TGA press release said.
“This is a major milestone in the fight against the Australian pandemic, but it is important to emphasize that this product does not prevent or mitigate mild coronavirus infections.”
Singapore, the United States, and the European Union have already approved emergency use of drugs in severe cases.
According to the TGA, tentative approval, limited to a maximum of 6 years, was based on preliminary clinical data and potential benefit to Australian patients.
This drug binds to the enzyme the virus uses to make a copy of its gene. The virus is unable to copy itself and is quickly cleared by the immune system.
After Victoria experienced the best COVID-19 cases in a day and Friday announced 288 cases of the virus.
For the first time, the count of active cases in the state exceeded 1000 and reached 1172. Currently 47 are hospitalized with coronavirus and 12 patients are receiving intensive care.
