Pathologists found blood clots in “almost all organs” during autopsy of COVID-19 patients
Autopsy of a coronavirus victim helps doctors understand how the disease affects the body, and pathologists say one of the most notable findings involves blood clots.
Dr. Amy Rapkiewicz, Dean of Pathology at NYU Langone Medical Center, published her work in the Lancet journal E Clinical Medicine at the end of June.
Doctors found coagulation of major blood vessels early in the pandemic, but autopsy revealed coagulation spread to small vessels throughout the body.
“And this was dramatic” Rapkiewicz told CNN“We might have expected it in the lungs, so we found it in almost every organ examined in an autopsy study.”
At necropsy, abnormal abnormalities were also found in megakaryocytes. Megakaryocytes are large bone marrow cells that normally do not circulate outside the bones or lungs.
“We found them in the heart and kidneys, liver and other organs,” Lapkiewicz said. “Especially in the heart, megakaryocytes produce what are called platelets, which are closely involved in blood coagulation.”
