Men's tennis advances to Patriot League finals with 4-0 victory over Army West Point
WEST POINT, NY After capturing a closely contested doubles point in thrilling fashion, Boston University's top-seeded men's tennis team rolled to a 4-0 victory in the Patriot League semifinals over No. 4 Army West Point. The match was held outdoors at the Malek Stadium.
With their ninth straight win, the Terriers improve to 20-7, while the Black Knights see their season end at 13-15. BU won a pair of tiebreakers to take the early 1-0 lead, then captured three singles points in straight sets to earn a Sunday morning match against five-time defending champion Navy, as head coach Dejan Stankovic reached the milestone of 100 wins.
Army suffered its first shutout PL tournament loss in 16 years since a 4-0 runner-up finish to Navy in 2008 and also failed to earn at least one point in the semifinals since a 4-0 loss to American in 2002.
The Black Knights posted a 6-2 win in No. 3 doubles and held the tiebreaker lead in two other matches. Jakob Esterowitz and oldest Johann Sajonz faced a 5-3 deficit in their respective tiebreak on Court 2 before rallying back for the 7-6(5) win. Sophomore Corey Craig And Alejandro Lycea overcame a 5-1 deficit to claim six straight points.
In singles, Esterowitz carried the momentum from his thrilling doubles victory to a 6-0, 6-1 Line 2 victory against the Black Knights. Freshmen Gustav Dambinalso cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory on Court 4, extending BU's lead to 3-0.
Craig soon after took the team victory in the top position with a 6-3, 6-1 win, improving to 25-1 in the spring. Licea, junior Dion Loutas and oldest Ben Letzer had all won a set when their matches were stopped.
BU will next take on the No. 2 seed Midshipmen on Sunday (April 28), a 4-2 win over No. 3 Bucknell, with an 11 a.m. start time. The Terriers are 0-5 all-time against Navy in the PL tournament after last year's 4-0 loss in the title game and will look to duplicate the efforts of a 4-2 win from March 24.
