Department of Health launches ‘Control Asthma’ campaign to identify and control childhood asthma triggers in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) recently launched a new public service announcement campaign that identifies common asthma triggers and offers simple activities that parents can incorporate into their daily lives to help manage asthma in their children. It was started.

According to 2020 data from the Hawaii Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System:

One in 13 children (7.7%) in Hawaii currently has asthma, higher than the national average (7.5%). In 2019, approximately 689 emergency department visits and 66 hospitalizations in Hawaii were due to asthma in children ages 0-4.

said Brian Wu, M.D., HMSA’s Medicaid Medical Director and pediatric pulmonologist at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. “Asthma triggers vary from person to person, including respiratory infections and environmental factors. Identifying triggers that make asthma worse is important for everyone in Hawaii, especially parents.
