Toddler gets infected after iguana snatches a slice of cake
A sweet-toothed iguana nibbled a little girl and then took away a slice of cake, leaving the little girl free of the cake and a rare virus.
On a family trip to Costa Rica, a 3-year-old girl was bitten on the back of her left hand by a lizard while she was eating cake on the beach. The child originally had a small sore that healed quickly, but five months later developed a rare bacterial infection known as Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum).
According to a case report published in European Conference on Clinical Microbiology and Infectious DiseasesM. marinum is usually reported only in fish, but has been transmitted to humans via skin wounds in contact with contaminated freshwater or seawater.
