Northern Michigan paper mill worker dies of fungal disease outbreak

Escanaba, Michigan (FOX 2) – A fungal outbreak at a paper mill in northern Michigan has killed one person and infected nearly 100, officials said.

Public Health Delta and Menominee County said on the weekend One person died from the disease, now identified as blastomycosis, with 21 confirmed and 76 classified as probable.

So far, 12 people have been hospitalized with the disease. The deceased was a contractor who worked at the Bireld paper mill.

“We are saddened to hear this news. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families, friends and colleagues who lost loved ones,” said Michael Snyder, who works at PHDM.

Last week, the paper mill’s owner announced that the mill would be temporarily shut down to allow for additional cleaning of the facility.

Blastomycosis is a disease associated with fungi that grow in moist soil and degrade materials such as wood and leaves, said a release from the Public Health Service. Infection occurs by inhaling the spores.

It cannot be spread from person to person or between animals and people.

Post-infection symptoms include cough, fever, chest pain, difficulty breathing, night sweats, fatigue, weight loss, muscle and joint pain. Treatment with antifungal drugs is also possible.

Health officials recommend getting an early diagnosis if you suspect someone has contracted the disease. Treatment options vary for up to a year depending on the severity of the infection.
