Health units urge adults to ‘catch up’ on routine immunizations
Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit Sends Reminders for National Immunization Awareness Week April 24-30
Due to the disruption caused by the pandemic, many adults in the region will have to keep up with routine vaccinations, according to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
This week, April 24-30, is Canada’s National Immunization Awareness Week, the health department said.
This year’s theme is “Catch up with confidence”.
The theme is a reminder that it’s imperative that adults keep up with the regular, publicly funded vaccines they need to stay healthy, the health department said in a news release.
“Because the protection provided by some vaccinations only lasts for a short period of time, get a booster shot in adulthood to protect yourself and others from vaccine-preventable diseases such as tetanus and whooping cough. is important.” Associate Medical Officer Colin Lee, Ph.D.
“Based on your age, health, work, lifestyle, or travel habits, you may also need other vaccines, such as shingles, at different life stages.
Newborn babies are susceptible to infectious diseases, so it is important that parents, grandparents, and others are well vaccinated against potentially dangerous diseases.
Make sure your Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough) is up to date, says the health department. If you haven’t had a booster in the last 10 years and during each pregnancy, you need a booster.
Adults who turn 65 are also eligible to receive the pneumococcal vaccine to prevent certain types of pneumonia. A publicly funded shingles vaccine is available for those aged 65 to 70 who have never had the shingles vaccine.
