Lyme disease on the rise in Wisconsin, UW Health Alert

Madison, Wisconsin (WMTV) – Reported cases of Lyme disease are increasing in Wisconsin, doubling on average over the past 15 years, data reports show.

Wisconsin is one of the states reporting the highest number of cases in the country, according to data from the Wisconsin Department of Health.

Dr. Gregory DeMuri, a pediatric infectious disease physician and professor of pediatrics at UW, explains that “data collection, public awareness, and climate change” are all contributing factors to the rising number of cases.

“Wisconsin reports the highest number of Lyme disease cases in the nation because the Wisconsin geography thrives very well, the winters are warmer, and ticks survive better,” DeMuri said. “We also have a much better tracking system in place for public awareness.”

In 2021, Wisconsin had an estimated nearly 5,000 Lyme disease cases, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates the total number of cases to be more than 10 times the number reported. This is especially common in spring season weather.

Lyme disease is a serious bacterial infection spread by black-footed ticks, also known as deer ticks. Up to 80% of infected people develop a bullseye-shaped rash that spreads over several days and can reach 12 inches wide, says UW Health. Other flu-like symptoms, such as swollen lymph nodes, may also occur.

According to DeMuri, children between the ages of 5 and 9 are the most susceptible to Lyme disease due to their short stature and weak immune systems. Ticks are now as likely to be found in parks and backyards as they are in northern forests.

The release says many clinics offer tick identification cards. If you find a tick, remove it within the first 24 hours to reduce your chances of getting Lyme disease. . Symptoms of Lyme disease appear 3 to 30 days after being bitten by a tick.

To avoid tick bites, UW Health recommends:

· Wear appropriate clothing: Wear long, light-colored trousers with taped bottoms. A tick crawls up the leg of the pants.

· Apply repellent: We recommend using a DEET or picaridin-based repellent on your skin. Permethrin spray is recommended for use on clothing.

・Thorough body check: Look carefully at all parts of her body: ears, legs, hair, and even her swimsuit.

· Check for ticks as pets, especially dogs, can bring them into your home.
