Local experts comment on WHO report on artificial sweeteners
Pinellas County, Fla. — Chereline Savoy underwent gastric bypass surgery at Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg three weeks ago.
So far she has lost 25 pounds.
“I’m doing great. I think it’s amazing. I haven’t felt this good in years,” said Savoy.
Along with the operation, Savoy says: She is committed to eating a healthy balanced diet.

“It’s a whole lifestyle change, so there’s not a lot of room for artificial sweeteners. Sometimes I drink water a day. I use sweeteners or something.”
Due to the potential health risks associated with these artificial sweeteners, the World Health Organization says they should not be used to control weight.
The WHO says sweeteners have no effect on weight loss and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even premature death.
We spoke with Dr. Alexander Ramirez of the Institute of Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery at Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg.
Obesity in the United States is worse than ever, he says.
“There is surplus food on offer. Too much free food. Too many opportunities to eat out. There are queues at restaurants every day.”
Dr. Ramirez says the sweeteners in many processed foods pose serious health problems.
“We’re talking about empty calories. All carbohydrates are empty calories. They provide energy, but no nutritional component,” Dr. Ramirez said.
In a statement, the Calorie Control Council, a food industry group, strongly opposed the WHO recommendations, saying the safety of non-sugar sweeteners is well established and safe for weight management.
Savoy, meanwhile, said he still eats what he wants but is focused on giving his body the fuel it needs.
“It’s more about taking care of yourself, what gets me through the day, what makes me feel good,” Savory said.
