Joy Andrew suffered a fatal illness in Grange Minister’s Home in May. Only two weeks later she received end-of-life care from a nurse.

Her condition was so serious that her daughter Michelle, 57, visited to say her “final farewell.”

However, when Joy demanded the wartime spirit to “miraclely defeat” COVID-19, nursing home staff were watching incredibly for weeks and months afterwards.

Joy, who is suffering from dementia, continues to recover at home, looking forward to his friends and family turning 100 on November 22.

Michel said: “My mother was always a very energetic woman.

“She took things on her stride and as many people from her generation who lived through the war tend to do.

“She has those characteristics with her to this day, and I think I’ve seen her over the past few months.

“She certainly didn’t want the coronavirus to kill her.

“Unfortunately, my mother’s dementia prevents her from recognizing her work.

“But her family is celebrating her recovery with me.”

Born and raised in northern London in the 1920s, Joy later joined the military air force as a sergeant during World War II, working in the bomber command room.

After the war, Joy joined the British Army of Rhine and was assigned to Düsseldorf. There, she became very friendly but stayed with an elderly couple who had a Nazi daughter.

According to Michel, while in Germany, Joy, from a German Jewish family, was assigned a driver to take her wherever she wanted to go.

Michelle said during a trip to Berlin, a driver known to be a Nazi crashed his car deliberately in an attempt to kill her.

Later, Joy joined the British Overseas Airways Corporation as one of the first air hostess to board a plane that crashed into Libya due to lack of fuel.

In the 1950s, Joy married RAF captain David Andrew, and in 1963 the couple adopted Michelle.

Joy broke breast cancer in the 1970s and spent decades as a housewife, and in 2013 David sadly succumbed to cancer himself.

Michele plans to unite the family later this year to celebrate Joy’s 100th birthday.
