Kent mother who found daughter’s cancerous mole says ‘you saved her life’

ITV Meridian’s Tony Green talks to Kara Reese and Michelle Baker of the Melanoma Foundation about how to spot the early signs of skin cancer.

When Karla Reese turned 30, she flew to Dubai with her mother for sun, sea and relaxation.

But when her mother was applying sunscreen to her back, she found a small mole that seemed to change shape and color.

Karla was so worried that she made an appointment with her GP as soon as she got home. Her decision saved her life.

Gravesend’s personal trainer had no family history of skin cancer or melanoma, but was quickly referred to a dermatologist, who quickly removed the mole.

Subsequent tests revealed that Carla, who had never used a sunbed, had a rapidly progressing melanoma, which was fortunately caught very early.

“We were really, really lucky that it didn’t spread,” she said. “Therefore, no further treatment, such as surgery, was necessary.

“Since then, I’ve been getting checks.

“Every three months we check the lymph nodes and check the skin.

“I was told at one appointment that if my mother hadn’t noticed the mole when she noticed it, it could have been deadly six months later.

“Yes, I was scared, and I was very lucky to find it when she found it.”
